Non-Cosmetic Reasons to Consider Veneers

Dental veneers are an excellent option for both men and women who hope to have their smile transformed. Veneers can correct several cosmetic issues like discolored or misshapen teeth. There are also non-cosmetic reasons to consider veneers that can provide an alternative to bonding or crowns.

Veneers provide dental health benefits and can help protect your teeth or fill in gaps. Composed of thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin, veneers have a versatile design and can correct many issues in only a few visits to the dentist. This minimally invasive procedure is a popular option among patients looking to fix both cosmetic and non-cosmetic issues while preserving their natural teeth.

At Willow Glen Dentistry, located in San Jose, CA, our dedicated team specializes in providing quality dental care. John M. Pisacane, DMD, can customize veneers to fit your mouth perfectly and match the size, color, and shape of your natural teeth. Consider how making an appointment with us can help you achieve the smile of your dreams and keep your teeth healthy.

What type of problems do veneers fix?

It is essential to understand when veneers are a good option and consult with Dr. Pisacane to determine if you would be a good candidate for treatment. An examination of your oral health and medical history will determine which option for treatment is best for you. Here are some cosmetic issues that dental veneers fix:

Dr. Pisacane can recommend dental veneers for cosmetic or non-cosmetic reasons. Here are some reasons you might consider dental veneers as a non-cosmetic procedure.

Repairing serious cracks

Minor cracks in your teeth present superficial concerns, but some cracks can threaten your dental health and weaken your teeth over time. An opening in your tooth gives way to bacteria and could lead to an infection that causes tooth decay. Sealing this crack is necessary and can save you from a painful root canal or extraction.

Veneers can provide a good alternative to crowns in some cases. They are bound to the surface of the tooth by Dr. Pisacane and are very effective in sealing the opening. Veneers allow you to retain more of your natural tooth and can be accomplished in the same day.

Restore damaged tooth enamel

Your enamel protects your teeth from decay and keeps harmful bacteria away from the inner layers of your tooth. Enamel naturally erodes over time, but can be worn down by certain types of foods and beverages. Veneers work like your enamel would, providing a harder outer layer for your teeth, acting as a protective barrier against further erosion.

Fill in potentially harmful gaps

Gaps in your teeth may make you reluctant to smile, but they may also present underlying health issues. Cavities tend to form in between the gaps of your teeth, and are most common in people who have large spaces in between their teeth where bacteria, plaque, and tartar tend to give way to decay. Veneers can close gaps and help you ward off periodontal disease or tooth loss.

What to expect from a dental veneer procedure

Electing to get dental veneers usually requires three visits to the dentist's office. At Willow Glen, we are proud to offer the CEREC® system, which allows us to create dental veneers perfectly shaped and made to match the natural shade of your teeth.

Dr. Pisacane is trained in completing CEREC same-day treatment in just two or three hours. He will start by prepping the tooth and conducting a root canal or filling if necessary. Pictures of the affected tooth will be taken, and the CEREC computer system will create a 3D map of the veneer.

The veneer is carved out of porcelain by the computer, and is made to fit your mouth perfectly. Dr. Pisacane will make any necessary adjustments and fit the veneer to your mouth. The porcelain veneer will be baked in a kiln-like oven, hardened and sealed to match the natural shade of your teeth. Once the product is cemented, you can return home with no downtime. CEREC offers an opportunity for you to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile without the wait.
