Preventive Dentistry in San Jose

Here at Willow Glen Dentistry, we know and understand the importance of good preventative care.
Part of this includes brushing and flossing your teeth properly.

Good dental preventative care is really important to ensure a healthy mouth, including your gums and teeth.

It is important to brush your teeth at least twice daily to help remove plaque and food particles that get stuck to your teeth. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for two minutes (or longer), though most people rush through this time. You need to make sure that you reach every side of each tooth, including the inside and outside. To help keep your breath fresh, you should also brush your tongue. Then, you can begin flossing.

It is recommended by the American Dental Association that you should floss your teeth at least once daily. Flossing is done to remove plaque that gets stuck in between your teeth. It also gets rid of any plaque that your toothbrush missed (or can’t get to)! If you don’t floss, you will have more problems with tartar, cavities, and even gum disease.

Though many people hate to do it, flossing is really necessary. You can use dental floss or even a pick that is specially designed for flossing. Though flossing shouldn’t be painful, it can feel different and awkward so it is important to keep at it. After a few days or weeks, it will become part of your dental routine.

How we remove plaque and tartar?

Professional cleanings by our experienced dental hygienists will remove the buildup of plaque and tartar. Then, your teeth are polished nicely. If you need it, fluoride will be applied to your teeth. We will also preserve any teeth that you have had restored.

Our caring dental hygienists will make sure you do not experience any discomfort during a cleaning. Cleanings also give our dentists a chance to examine your teeth, and catch any problems before they become bigger ones!
Our dentists will exam your teeth after every cleaning to make sure nothing is missed.

Here are some FAQs about general dentistry:

What age should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?
It is recommended that you take your children for their first dental appointment when they are around six months old. If you notice that your children have discolored teeth, you will want to bring them in before this.

What should I use to clean my baby’s teeth?
Any soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head. There are ones designed specially for infants that are perfect to use at bedtime.

What should I do if my child has a toothache?
First, you will want to rinse the irritated area with warm water and place a cold compress on your child’s face it if is swollen. You can give your child acetaminophen for the pain. Once you do this, make sure that you see your dentist as soon as possible.

How can I prevent decay caused by nursing?
Try to avoid nursing children to sleep or putting anything other than water in their bedtime bottle. Also, make sure that you learn and teach your children the proper way to floss and brush at a young age. Taking your children to the dentist regularly to have their teeth checked will help them learn lifelong habits.
